Come One, Come All!

By Carol Wheeler

One much-awaited event of the San Miguel La Calaca Festival is set to take place on Sunday, November 4th, when Anado McLauchlin and Richard Schultz will host an Open Studio at the fabulous (literally, the place is the stuff of fables—you might want to write one) Chapel of Jimmy Ray Gallery on the grounds of Casa de Las Ranas (another fabulous construction) in Cieneguita, just outside of town. So, Anado says, “Be there…doors open at 9am and will be open till 5 in the afternoon.” The Open Studio at the Chapel Gallery happens at one of the most colorful and festive locations in the entire San Miguel galaxy, and one of the most unusual events to occur during our La Calaca Festival. The Chapel is only open to the public for very special occasions.

La Calaca Open Studio
Chapel of Jimmy Ray
Sun, Nov 4, 9am-5pm
More info: 155-8044

At the event, Anado will be showing his complete, current body of work, including his one-of-a-kind and evocative necklaces, bracelets and earrings. There will also be a “One Day Only” clearance sale of folk art and unusual objects from the renowned McLauchlin

Schultz collection, pieces being offered for sale to make room for more mosaic work in their home. Casa de Las Ranas and the Chapel of Jimmy Ray have become international destinations for curious seekers of the not-so sublime but extremely-riotous over the last eleven years in San Miguel. What is sometimes known as McLauchlin’s Folly has been covered by the world press over the years, including a special feature in the New York Times, replete with photo eye candy. The grounds of the casa and the gallery will be open for wandering and discovery. This is a treat not to be missed!
