More than a Brutal Race
By Antonio De Jesús Aguado
More than 3000 warriors, heroines and superheroes gathered at los Senderos on September 29 in order to fight a battle against themselves by strolling a military-style path with obstacles such as: pipes, ramps, spiky wires, artificial wells and even smoking tunnels.
The contestants started arriving at 8:30am, in disguises of Mexican wrestlers such as Tinieblas, El Santo or Pirata Morgan. They also wore disguises of El Chapulín Colorado (The red Grasshopper) a classic character from Mexican TV, other just wore mustaches or rabbit’s ears.
Every 30 minutes, in the starting line, a group of about 200 people started the competition against their own fears. They all knew that they would arrive to the finishing line, but did not know when or how. At the cry of “we are warriors, we are brutal! The teams left the starting line for facing more than 10 obstacles. They were not waiting for a prize, but demonstrate themselves what they were capable of.
The first two obstacles were artificial wells which included poles across for avoiding the racers passing, although, all of them got in and got out victorious. The third obstacle was a web made of ropes, some of the contestants avoided it but most of them entered.
The warriors had to trespass spaces by pipes and in some other parts of the journey the only way of passing by was crawling due to the spiky wires above them which could hurt their backs.
The most controversial and creepy obstacle in the journey was that where the competitors had to jump from a height of six meters approximately and fall down in a well with the same profundity. Some jumped by themselves, other were pushed by their “friends”, some jumped in pairs, with closed or wide open eyes, at the end, all of them passed the obstacle.
In the last proves the superhorse had to pass by crawling through smoking tunnels or hang from hanging hoops in order to arrive to the finishing line. During the journey, men helped the women to pass the obstacles, helping them their back or arms. Friendship and brotherhood could be seen among the competitors. At the end, they enjoyed a Cerveza and did not care their dirty clothes or sweat, they stayed for a brutal carnival. Until the next year Carrera Brutal.
