Vet Talk: Parasites in dogs

By Ana Roxanda Godoy

Parasites in domestic dogs are either external or internal. Some parasites are just annoying; others may be harmful. Some cause symptoms; others are symptom-free.

Types: Examples of external parasites are fleas, flies, lice, mites, and ticks. The most common internal parasites are roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, threadworms, heartworms, tapeworms, tracheal worms, coccidian, and giardia.

Symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment: Dog owners can observe signs of external parasites such as seeing the insects themselves, noticing skin sores or irritation, hair loss, dirty ears, and flaky patches of skin. Diseases caused by external parasites must be vet diagnosed. Internal parasites are often visible in a dog’s feces in addition to the accompanying physical symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, perhaps with blood, weight loss, dry hair, general poor appearance, and vomiting. Worm eggs can be dormant in the dog’s body, activated only in times of stress or pregnancy. A veterinarian must perform appropriate tests to diagnose the existence of and type of worms. Early diagnosis is vital.

Prevention: Use monthly external applications of a product such as Frontline Plus to control certain external parasites. Medicinal baths may be necessary for some parasites, best provided under your vet’s supervision. Remove feces promptly from your backyard. Use the correct de-wormer under veterinary supervision and have the dog’s feces checked frequently in persistent cases.
