20 years of FAI, our partnership with CASA

By Alexa Fullerton & Sylvia Van Dijk

FAI (the Fundación de Apoyo Infantil, Guanajuato, AC) is celebrating 20 years of working with children in our state in accordance with the International Convention of the Rights of the Child. FAI is a Children’s Rights (Human Rights) organization and has worked directly with more than 150,000 children making positive changes in their lives.

In the early 90’s during our networking activities we were asked by Nadine Goodman to look at the child care center for adolescent mothers, which had just started at CASA.

We began by evaluating CASA’s childcare program. Together we decided to start a project for the alternative professionalization of adolescents who wanted to work in the center on a permanent basis. Because of FAI’s relationship with the Secretary of Education of Guanajuato we knew that the ministry had a program in which community girls were trained as preschool teachers in a nontraditional way. That is, trained directly in the field, working with children and meeting once a month in a training center. FAI linked CASA to the ministry of Education so they could be a part of this training and FAI was instrumental in helping CASA find funding for this project.

Since then the childcare program has worked successfully creating favorable conditions for young children in the crucial years of their development.
