Intro to Rock and Roll!

By Tom Lilienthal

How many of us have gone to Rock and Roll music concerts or to see a local band, listened to a CD or the radio and imagined ourselves enjoying being able to play guitar and perform for an appreciative audience? At one time in our life we may have even bought a guitar with the idea of learning to play but the guitar ended up gathering dust in the closet.

All that is about to change. Tom Lilienthal, a California State credentialed music teacher and professional musician who has recorded and toured with many well-known artists, is offering his much heralded “Intro to rock and roll” class. This class is about having a lot of fun in a positive, non-threatening environment where everyone succeeds.

Tom tells us that for this class, “No prior music experience is necessary, only a positive attitude and a desire to learn.” The class level is from total beginner to beginner/intermediate.

Tom taught this class for over 10 years at the middle school and high school levels in California and for the last couple of years near Puerto Vallarta to ex-pats. He has taught this class to students ranging from the age of twelve to people in their late seventies. A number of pevious students of this class have gone on to form their own bands and perform regularly at amateur and professional levels. Others have just enjoyed learning new tunes and playing for their own enjoyment.

The only “tools” that students need to bring to class are an acoustic or electric guitar with a strap, an extra set of strings, a spiral notebook, and a pencil. If you don’t have access to a guitar, contact Tom and he can make suggestions regarding purchasing one. The class will meet at Longhorn Restaurant, Salida a Celaya 6, on each Monday and Thursday from 10-11am.

The class will:

1. Concentrate on Classic Rock and Roll tunes as our foundation for learning
2. Gain proficiency on guitar
3. Be given the tools to learn more tunes
4. Learn how to run an efficient rehearsal, learn to perform in front of an audience
5. Learn how to listen to music in a more effective way.
