Twenty years of children’s rights
By Alexa Fullerton & Sylvia Van Dijk
FAI (the Fundacion de Apoyo Infantil, Guanajuato, AC ) is celebrating 20 years working with the children of our state in accordance with the International Convention of the Rights of the Child. FAI is a Children’s Rights (Human Rights) organization.
Children’s rights not only include food, clothing, shelter and education for children as passive recipients of an adult’s care but the right to participate and have their own opinions, their own opportunities to make decisions and to be protected from violence, abuse, neglect and abandonment. Children also have the right to a clean environment (clean drinking water, clean rivers, clean lakes, clean air, healthy forests and deserts), a caring community, good quality education, good health care and good nutrition as well as a right to recreation.
Understanding these rights means that children grow up with clear boundaries and a sense of responsibility. They are guided to take care of themselves with good nutrition and healthy habits. For example, a child can decide for him/herself to buy potato chips or an orange with the five pesos their mother gives them to get a snack.
Children growing up with this education learn to be respectful of their parents and people who have opinions different from theirs. They can then become active citizens with a caring attitude about what happens in their streets, in their schools, in their parks, community, state, country and the planet as a whole.
This explanation of the general principals of the work of FAI begins a series of articles to celebrate our 20th anniversary of working in the State of Guanajuato with the children of our schools and communities. We will be sharing the impact of many of our remarkable projects in further articles.
