Adoptions of long-ime residents: 2012 success stories (so far)
By Megan Gabel
What do Barley, Amy, Callita, Duquesa, Luciérnaga and Yelka have in common? In addition to being among the 66 adoptions during the first six months of 2012, their adoptions were particularly worthy of celebration because each of these wonderful dogs had inexplicably been at the SPA for close to twoi years, one almost three years.
Handsome Barley was always very anxious to go for a walk. He would pull a volunteer to the outside, eager to see what the day had in store for him. He was only two months old when he came to the SPA.
Beautiful Amy, only three months old when she came to the SPA, has a striking black face and piercing eyes. She was adopted with Yelka, a lithe, acrobatic, affectionate little girl, who was only four months when she came to the SPA. Their new family was able to discern the marvelous qualities of each of these dogs and take them into their home.
Callita’s lovely face won over her new owner who saw her picture in the Atención. Now she has a sister at her new home with whom she bonded immediately. Their first night together, they were spooning as they slept. Callita was about nine months old when she came to the SPA.
Adorable Luciérnaga is a joyful dog, easy to walk, playful and smart… so smart that when she finally went to her forever home, she refused to eat for the first day. To entice her appetite, her new owners gave her cooked chicken instead of kibble. We all laughed when we heard how she had maneuvered that one!
Duquesa had been at the SPA for almost three years when she was adopted by a couple who fell in love with her instantly. Duquesa walks awkwardly from an old hip injury. Her new owners found her walk adorable! The day they adopted her, we saw them at Mega, buying up a storm – a cushy bed, toys – for their wonderful new pet.
Dorita (5/28/09), Guera (“Blondie”) (12/29/09), and Shy (11/18/10) have been at the SPA for too long and are ready for forever homes.
