Captured: The Road to Santiago de Compostela

By Camie Sands

A journey remains a series of impressions in the mind’s eye. For painter Richard Trumbull these lasting images became the story of a long walk to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, with his wife Sylvia, along a path taken since the ninth century by searchers, pilgrims…the curious…the content. This path offers solitude and community, activity and repose. Trumbull captures it all in 12 small paintings that appear to be a journey through the physical world toward the equipoise of internal journeys.

See the solitude of a country road as his brush captures the glow, mist, fields, the long curve like an invitation to reflectiveness and quiet. Blink, and another frame brings in the mood of mid-day and the excitement of coming upon a village complete with possibilities for laughter and stories shared. Moments of light-fused memory from viewpoints of imagined birds overhead to visions of sun-warmed streets where feet are connected to earth and architecture are connected in this series as the joy and hope of a journey.

Trumbull’s short story is laid down in intuitive mixes of bold strokes — deep blue shadows, dove gray days, olive hillsides, ocher lanes — by a painter who is yet a student of nature and human nature, always seeking that place in his landscapes where the external informs our interior vistas and moves us along our path. Let these paintings, a memory of the long walk to Santiago de Compostela ‘The Way of St. James,’ inspire a journey you want to make.

Trumbull’s paintings have been shown in Mexico and California in a wide variety of exhibitions and solo shows. He is a resident of San Miguel and San Diego.

Trumbull’s Captured: The Road to Santiago de Compostela opens at Zoho Gallery during Fabrica La Aurora’s Annual White Party, Saturday, August 4, from 6 to 9pm. Refreshments will be served.
