Pets of the month: honey, why is that bag moving?
By Lynn Weisberg and Joan DiPiero
Our featured dogs this month are Kara and Kelly, mixed-breed siblings. Last March, a visiting couple encountered a plastic bag on their doorstep. Not unusual, until they realized the bag was moving! They discovered four tiny puppies, about two and a half months old, squirming inside. One pup was immediately adopted by friends; the others were brought to the SPA. Luckily, we had enough room to accept them. Two of these puppies, Kara and Kelly, are still waiting to find loving homes. Both are lovely girls, full of curiosity and personality, each with bright eyes and expressive faces. They are playful, active, affectionate, good with children and other dogs, and give great face licks! Their antics make us smile. We know they would be great pets.
Our featured cats this month are two remarkable moms, Abby and Maggie. Abby, a beautiful two-year-old Calico, showed up stuffed with her three nursing babies in an old, rusted birdcage. Extracting all four took considerable skill as well as a gentle touch, but Abby seemed unfazed. Her babies were with her so all was right with the world. All her kittens have been adopted, so she is now free as a bird (couldn’t help myself) and ready for a loving home. She is sweet and affectionate.
Maggie, also two, has an equally compelling bio. She arrived with newborn kittens and was a wonderful mom. Finished with nursing her own babies, she was asked to volunteer for another assignment, nursing four orphaned kittens no more than ten days old. She didn’t hesitate, licking each one as it came near and offering milk within a short time. Now these babies have been adopted and Maggie hopes it’s her time for a new home.
Adopt any of these Pets of the Month during August and receive a free adoption kit. For dogs, the adoption kit is a toy, food, a collar and a leash. For cats, the kit is a starter kit of a litter pan with litter, a scoop and food.
