San Miguel de Allende Democrats Abroad July 4 party a huge success

By Mark Bilker

Setting both attendance and fundraising records, the seventh annual edition of San Miguel de Allende’s Democrats Abroad July 4th holiday celebration marked a most successful start to the organization’s ambitious, non-partisan San Miguel Voting Project.

Aptly described as a “rousing and dousing success” in recognition of the record crowd and the late afternoon dousing the guests received, the almost 200 attendees were treated to a wonderful and traditional afternoon of grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers and trimmings, auction prizes, and lots of good old-fashioned John Phillips Sousa music.

The Voting Project, which will be targeted to the estimated 5,000 to 10,000 American citizens in the cities of San Miguel, Queretaro and Guanajuato, is designed to motivate and assist as many of these prospective voters as possible to register and cast their ballots in the 2012 Presidential election.

Toward this end the organization will be launching a major media campaign in both English and Spanish encouraging all eligible citizens to register to vote by August 15. A special outreach effort directed toward dual Mexican/US citizens will be a project priority.

In announcing its 2012 Voting Project, Chapter officials emphasized that US citizens must be made aware of recent changes in the rules governing voter registration. New regulations require that all overseas voters MUST register anew for each election. This re-registration may be easily accomplished electronically via The process is quite simple and painless. Chapter volunteers are available to answer questions related to the registration process at

A detailed guide to the entire absentee registration and voting process, including information about where both internet and hands-on assistance may be obtained, has been prepared by the Voting Project and will appear in the August 3 issue of Atención.

With its membership approaching 1,000, the SMA Democrats Abroad chapter is the third largest in the world, behind only Paris and London in total membership. It is by far the largest and most active chapter in Latin America and is the largest expat membership organization in San Miguel.
