In an interview Estrada said his multi-disciplinary work of acting, music and dance asks the audience to imagine having a conversation with the long-dead Frida about current developments in contemporary Mexico.
“I have tried to reflect her political and ideological thinking, her participation in the Communist Party and, of course, her affair with Trotsky,” says the playwright.
Dealing with such issues requires a very deft human touch, he added, but he believes the show, complete with elaborate costuming is a thorough and honest treatment of Frida’s values in all respects.
Gilberto Estrada had his first encounter with the life and work of Frida years ago when he first read a book on the painter written by Hayden Herrera. He became fascinated with the life of Frida Kahlo, her art and its expression within her challenging personality considering the cultural atmosphere that surrounded her at a time when there was an explosion of creativity in Mexico in many art movements. From this, he was inspired to write his interdisciplinary script for theater and dance.
The show promises to be an intriguing and imaginative blend of color, dance, music and passion as the soul of Mexico’s premier female artista is explored within the context of today’s Mexico.
