A unique English-Spanish teaching session
By Joseph Toone
In a unique combination of talents, the San Miguel Allende School of English and Habla Hispana (a local Spanish instruction school) held a joint evening session. The night featured four foreign Spanish learning students speaking to over a dozen local Mexicans learning English on topics of mutual interest. Topics included travel, work, spirituality and family while the foreign students hailed from Paris, Montreal, New York City and Hollywood. Each offered a wide variety of perspectives and accents.
The foreign students included a mid wife, former child star, Broadway director and children’s nurse. Local students included high schoolers, finance executives, artists and business owners. In a nod to American-style speed dating, English learning students were able to quickly practice their English while discussing subjects of mutual interest with Spanish learning students from around the world.
Habla Hispana director, Angelica Rodriguez, exclaimed “We are so fortunate to have such a unique opportunity to expand the cultural opportunities for our students.” Meanwhile the non-profit SMA School of English President, Joseph Toone, was thrilled that “Our student body had a great time hearing a variety of accents from folks of such diverse and fascinating backgrounds. We are truly blessed to teach here in San Miguel.”
