Gigante Goes Green!

By Luc Monzies

The past few years have treated San Miguel citizens and tourists to many opportunities to eat better, care for the planet and support the local economy. But while business is good for the Saturday farmers’ market, specialty stores and gourmet restaurants around town, many locals still do not have access to healthy alternatives. And for busy working families, going  out of their way to improve their family’s diet is difficult and expensive.

So the idea was born to bring healthy options to the Tuesday market shoppers in an existing space adjacent to the Tuesday market (also known as El Tianguis or La Placita) that once served as a loading dock for the Gigante store. The conversion of this space — now known as “La Cámara” — began a year ago as a venue for local and international artists as well as for popular cultural events such as Cervantino International Festival and Guanajuato International Film Festival.

To add to its menu of cultural offerings, starting Tuesday April 10 La Cámara will open its doors from 9am to 3pm to host “La Romería” an alternative market featuring local food, innovative design and green living products. La Romería is a joint initiative of La Cámara, San Miguel’s environmentalists, its traditional artisans and its hip youth.

The idea to combine design, culture and food in a pleasant environment is not new, in fact it is based on markets all over the world that for centuries have connected people to the beat of the urban hub. The pleasant atmosphere of La Romería, shaded by high ventilated ceilings, will be a great place to socialize, shop or even visit La Camara’s second floor contemporary art gallery. Other conveniences will include a kids’ corner, a prepared foods section, a salad bar, and a wholesale organic bulk food section.

La Romería shoppers looking to learn to grow their own food will also delight in La Cámara’s  urban gardening club called “Eco-urbanismo.” The group, open to beginner gardeners, will meet during Tuesday market hours.  Instructors will teach strategies for growing food on rooftops and patios. An urban garden has been planted inside the converted warehouse space to serve as a hands-on learning tool. So if you’re curious come April 10 to the old Gigante loading docks and watch the tomatoes grow! There is plenty of free parking! You can then walk to your favorite vendors of the Tuesday market to continue your purchases as usual.
