A brutal race for fun and fundraising

By Antonio De Jesús Aguado

Preparations are underway for San Miguel’s first Carrera Brutal (Brutal Race), an event to be held on September 29 that is expected to attract more than 4,000 attendees of all ages to the city. Participants will follow an obstacle-filled route on foot that crosses a variety of terrains designed to test their strength, stamina and concentration. It will be the first event of its kind in Mexico.

Lisa León told Atención that her son, Levi, a 27-year-old fitness trainer from San Miguel, developed the idea for the Carrera Brutal based on competitions in which she has participated in the US. The obstacles that participants will have to face include natural and man-made impediments, possibly even including fire and bulls. According to the official website for the event (, the contestants will cross through mountains and ravines, climbing, crawling and otherwise maneuvering their way to the finish line.

Lisa said that in this event the contestants will compete not against the other entrants but against themselves. Each entrant will decide which obstacles he or she wants to face and what time to begin the race. Besides the energy and drive to participate, there are no special requirements. The course will cover approximately eight to ten kilometers and will take around two hours to complete. The more than 20 obstacles will be revealed on the day of the event. A costume contest will also be held, with prizes for the best costume and the most comical one. There will also be music and vendors.

Levi said that they launched the website and the first promotions in January of this year and 300 contestants have already enrolled. He is expecting 700 more to take part. He added that they are planning to hold this event every year on the fourth Saturday of September, improving it every year, and in this way make it a substitute for the Sanmiguelada (running of the bulls), which was canceled in 2007.

Apart from bringing tourists and money to San Miguel, the Carrera Brutal is also a benefit for some nonprofit organizations such as the Red Cross and the fire department. All the information and requirements to enroll and support this event can be found in English and Spanish on the event’s website:
