Proyecto Lavanda/Lavander Project

Two years ago, the women and a few old men in Rancho La Colorada were supporting themselves mostly through subsistence farming in a field surrounded by nopal cactus are 2,000 fat lavender plants, which fill the country air with their famous aroma.

Now that the organic lavender plants are producing flowers, the town’s co-operatives have started to sell goods in San Miguel de Allende.

The farmers, with “seed” grants and training from St. Anthony’s Alliance began with just one acre of lavender in the spring of 2007. One farmer was enterprising enough to approach the Business Incubators Program at UTNG, the university in Dolores Hidalgo and in January of 2008 they received all of the technical support needed to incorporate their small business, which they named Azul Lavanda. With a grant from the City of Dolores Hidalgo with matching funds from St. Anthony’s Alliance they purchased an oil distiller, built a warehouse and put in drip irrigation. Now with almost four acres of organic lavender under cultivation, business is blooming. Their fresh flowers, wreaths and bouquets are sold in local markets. And they are beginning to produce the lucrative organic lavender oil so highly prized in aromatherapy, perfumes, soaps and lotions. A group is in negotiations with a large hotel to provide their amenities and spa products and another, a fledgling sewing cooperative, Azucenas de Joaquín, is sucssesfully handcrafting sachet bags, embroidered eye pillows, baskets and a variety of other handicrafts were in demand.

Casa Carly

Nestled surreptitiously behind massive iron doors, the nonconformist property of Carly Cross was purchased and renovated a few years ago when a debris-filled basement was found under the main dilapidated building and run-down land surrounding it. Nonplussed, Carly immediately saw its potential, and went to work with great plans for the property, taking a mere four months with her hard-working crew to complete construction in time for 30 kids arriving for camp, adding seven “casitas” and renovating the main house. The entrance patio contains a beautiful fountain, ancient palm trees, and is surrounded by vibrant colours of the buildings surrounding and facing the garden. All of the casitas are painted in smashing colours, blending effortlessly wall against wall, and decorated with colourful folk art, paintings, knick-knacks, and decoration from all over the world.
