Special Book Sale at La Biblioteca
By Kathleen Ellsworth
The Biblioteca is once again having its special book sale on February 11, Saturday, from 10am to 1pm. This time we will have some special things for sale that are not usually at the sale. Peggy Bell donated George Bell’s collection of vinyl records and we will have them on sale for 5 pesos each record. There are operas, classical music, some jazz and just a little rock ‘n roll. There will also be some VCR tapes of music performances and some music cassettes.
There will also be a collection of art or craft books and cookbooks and a nice collection of architecture and interior design, a collection of sewing books which include some on how to make patterns and quilts.
We also have picture books and some popular fiction and non-fiction books, some with author signatures. There are a few books on Mexico and some wonderful books on motorcycle touring.
The best bet is to come and see what is there. The prices are good and all the proceeds will go to purchasing new books for the Biblioteca. This collection of books comes from the wonderful donations that have come into the Biblioteca.

Be a Kid Again!
As a kid in the 60s, I fell in love with The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. The tree with so much unconditional love, always there for the boy. Who wouldn’t fall in love? It took Shel Silverstein four years to get this story published, but thank goodness he did. Throughout his life he wrote many poems and stories that have invoked laughter, smiles and love by children and adults alike. I have enjoyed the excuse of children to indulge my love for reading his works again and again.
Shel Silverstein passed away in 1999 at the age of 68. He wrote so much during his life that his work continues to be published posthumously. His latest collection is Every Thing On It. My favorite in this collection is “Italian Food” on page 155. “Oh, how I love Italian food. I eat it all the time. Not just ‘cause how good it tastes But ‘cause how good it rhymes.” So true!
You can find some of Shel’s works at La Biblioteca. (They are all in hardcover. Shel didn’t want to diminish his works in any way so he refused to publish in paperback.) They are all in the Juvenile Room but don’t be shy about wandering in. Be a kid again, or just borrow one, so you can enjoy over and over the magic of Shel Silverstein!
