Funky, Fuerte, Fuaaaa!

By Doug Robinson

I am please to announce that Mo’ Ritmo, my intrepid all-star group of jazz, rock and Latin musicians, will present 90 minutes of exciting new music at El Sindicato.

Concert: Mo’Ritmo, Wed, Feb 8, 8pm. El Sindicato, Recreo 4. 150 pesos, students 80 pesos

This bilingual concert is the first in a series of events I will be producing in 2012. Performing is in my blood, but I also love to present outstanding artists from Mexico and the US in venues that are suited to them. For example, Grammy-winner pianist and composer Don Grusin and Medianoche will be performing in March at a benefit for El Sindicato; guitarist extraordinaire Wayne Johnson will present a more intimate concert in a smaller teatro later in the year, and so on.

For Mo’ Ritmo, however, the newly-revamped teatro at El Sindicato is perfect—spacious enough for 120 or more, but intimate enough so that every seat is a winner. Drummer Rick Shlosser, who has performed and recorded with everyone from Van Morrison to Bonnie Raitt, will hold down the rhythm section along with bassist Beto González (most recently seen playing with violinist Pedro Cartas). Guitarist Ken Basman and I will handle the melody work and bring a definite jazz flavor to music by The Beatles, Herbie Hancock, The Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck and maybe even Ray Charles. And the evening will also feature original compositions that have never been heard in San Miguel.

There will be lots of surprises too—every single ticket qualifies you to win a free CD during the concert; we might actually have a visit from some psychedelic dancers, and more. Our goal is to take you on a 90-minute trip to another world of quality music you won’t hear anywhere else in town.

I think this concert is going to be fun for everyone, but especially if you like the artists I mentioned. Tickets are available at four La Conexión offices: Aldama, Keith’s Longhorn Restaurant, the Libramiento and Café Monet, as well as the Sindicato offices. We sold out last year’s medianoche concert in the same teatro, so buy your tickets now.

Vamos a sacar el FUA!

Tickets 150 pesos; 220 per person for a private table which includes a glass of wine and a delicious botana; estudiante tickets are only 80.

Doug Robinson is a musician and concert producer. He has recorded and performed with jazz legends such as Peter Erskine, Mike Stern and John Patitucci.
