Boullosa, Carral and Onno Plant a Garden
By Margaret Failoni
It’s always amazing to me how one theme can be interpreted so differently, as is the case in the beautiful and fascinating exhibition which opens in the Espacio Carral of the Aurora Design Center for the February Art Walk. Floras are the theme and each artist brings a very personal approach to the subject. Marisa Boullosa, who is best known for her cutting edge graphic art work -her last exhibition was a conceptual installation of prints and objects dealing with the subject of Mexican migration- created beautifully executed works for this show: tropical plant life painted on amate paper and pressed onto canvas. The images are large, delicate, pale, dreamlike and unabashedly romantic.
Art:Exhibit Boullosa, Carral & Onno plant a garden. Sat, Feb 4, 6-9pm. Galería Espacio Carral, Fábrica La Aurora
Marilo Carral never disappoints with her riotous Fauvist palette, but this time around, there are more floral portraits than bouquets. These new flower portraits are not just the usual joyous cacophony of blooms but introduce an element of sensuality not previously seen in her work.
Mai Onno’s work is perhaps the least embracing to the subject matter but never disappoints with her unique use of color and always generously expressionistic use of the brushstroke.
What a lovely garden to walk into when entering this gallery.
