By Dan Roy

“Isabella &”, a new series of paintings by local artist Michael Kibble, kicks off a fund-raising effort for the SPA with a gala opening reception at Fabrica La Aurora’s James Harvey Gallery.

“We are very happy to offer 100% of the opening night’s profits to the SPA,” said gallery owners James Harvey and Frank Rogers. After the opening until the show’s closing, 50% of the profits will be donated to the SPA. “We hope this gives everyone a great incentive to not only attend the opening but to buy that evening,” Harvey continued.

The paintings, 16 in all, represent Kibble’s latest creative efforts, this time highlighting his beloved Shitsu, “Isabella”. The images feature Isabella with such luminaries as Marilyn Monroe, Carmen Miranda and the Virgin of Guadalupe and even a Mexican wrestler. “I have explored several styles in this latest group of paintings,” Kibble said, “from Toulouse Lautrec to Jamie Wyeth. While some of the paintings are very realistic, many are rather whimsical.” In addition to several artistic styles, Kibble explores using a variety of mediums, even metallic copper dust. The results are “truly original and demonstrate the integral part of our lives a pet can play.” Kibble uses techniques inspired by several art trips to the US in 2011. As this was his first foray into this subject he “let my imagination soar, and often get the best of me. I think everyone will enjoy the results.”

The show is just one of many local efforts to raise money for the SPA which has done an outstanding job in finding homes for local stray dogs and cats, sterilization, and clearing the packs of wild animals that used to terrorize our streets. “Pets truly enrich our lives and nourish our souls. We need to do all we can to promote and protect them. We are hoping this show will raise some much-needed funds so the SPA can continue their fine work,” said James Harvey. This fun, innovative show extends through the month of February.
