Hospice San Miguel Hosts Volunteer Information Session
By Kitty Ellis
Hospice San Miguel will introduce its mission and the range of opportunities open to volunteers. Participants will hear staff members and current volunteers speak on the topic of compassionate home-based care for dying people and their families. The Hospice end-of-life model allows the dying to spend their remaining days in dignity and safety under the care of a team of volunteers and professionals who support this choice. “We hold out hope,” says Hospice Director of Social Services Dorie Beach, “for a peaceful, pain-free death to those whose prognosis is limited.” With doctor approval, Hospice offers this service without charge to any San Miguel resident with a terminal illness.
Meeting: Hospice San Miguel information session w/ Group Offers Compassionate End-of-Life Care. Sat, Jan 28, 10am-1pm. Hospice. 16 de Septiembre 4, Colonia Allende
Among Hospice SMA’s goals for 2012 is to expand its strongly supported volunteer corps. “We have many areas open to your expertise,” says Hospice Volunteer Coordinator Kitty Ellis, “and will work with you to find a fit that matches your interests.” The organization has an acute need for patient and family support volunteers and provides training for people who would like to help in that way. Client-based support is wide-ranging and can include reading, talking and listening to patients as well as offering respite to their caregivers. Volunteers are also needed to provide administrative and managerial assistance in fundraising, program development, community outreach, massage, music and art therapy and other areas, and English and Spanish speakers are equally welcome to join.
Ellis and her team have designed an innovative “cracker barrel” session (think speed-dating) that will give participants a chance to interact with staff and volunteers as well as family members who have benefited from Hospice. “At the end of the session,” says Ellis, “we think potential volunteers will have a good idea of how our needs and their skills align.” She adds, “and we’ll work swiftly to follow up with each of them.” Permanent and part-time residents of San Miguel are welcome to participate in the information session and to volunteer for Hospice SMA. Prospective volunteers who aren’t able to attend the Information Session are encouraged to call the Hospice SMA office at 152.6620 from 9:30am-5:30pm, Mon-Fri.
