Flores del Alma, music to warm the soul

Concert for Tenor, Classical Guitar and Harp

By Stan Gray

Three of the most accomplished performers in the international concert world will bring their considerable talents to San Miguel de Allende for “Flores del Alma,” a magical concert at the Teatro Angela Peralta.

Flores del Alma, San Miguel Chamber Music Festival, Thu, Jan 19, 7pm, Teatro Ángela Peralta, 350/250/100 pesos

Tenor Jamie MacDougall and guitarist Matthew McAllister are both Scottish, and harpist Angel Padilla is Mexican, but together they make music that knows no borders. The musicians will present a varied program of solos, duets and trios encompassing a broad variety of styles and themes, concentrating on classical arrangements of folk and traditional songs of England, Scotland, Spain and Mexico. This original program has delighted audiences in Europe and is now being brought to Mexico for the first time by the San Miguel Chamber Music Festival and the Anglo Mexican Foundation.

Each of the three musicians has a brilliant international concert reputation. Tenor Jamie MacDougall sings regularly with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and his singing career has taken him to Europe, the Far East, Australia and North America. He has worked with some of the world’s top baroque, chamber and symphony orchestras, and has released more than 20 CD recordings, including the complete folk song output of Joseph Haydn.

Fellow Scotsman Matthew McAllister is widely regarded as one of the most exciting and talented classical guitarists in Europe, and has been delighting audiences across Europe and beyond with his thoughtful performances and effortless presentation of music from renaissance miniatures to contemporary masterpieces.

Harpist Angel Padilla has taken his brilliant musicianship from his home in Mexico to highly successful concert tours in the United States, Canada, France, the UK, Spain, Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Venezuela and Russia. In the rarefied world of the concert harp, he is widely regarded as one of the great instrumentalists and musicians performing today.

The three musicians are bringing their great talents to present “Flores del Alma,” a wonderfully eclectic and charming program. They will be playing works arranged by Isaac Albeniz, Manuel de Falla, Manuel Ponce, and Benjamin Britten, among others. They will also perform a set of poems set to traditional melodies and arranged by the celebrated contemporary composer Eddie McGure. This program will stimulate and delight the most discerning audiences. It will be a very special musical presentation to benefit the San Miguel Chamber Music Festival.
