Feliz cumpleaños Mujeres en Cambio!
By Arlene Krasner
It’s Mujeres en Cambio’s birthday and we’re celebrating for the whole month of January. Join us for our birthday luncheon, at the Hacienda de las Flores, on January 19.
Benefit luncheon, Mujeres en Cambio January Birthday Luncheon, Thu, Jan 19, 2 pm, Hacienda de las Flores, Hospicio 16, 150 pesos, Purchase tickets in advance, Solutions, Mesones 57/La Conexion, Aldama 3
Noren Caceres, chef/owner at the new restaurant La Frontera and guest chef for our special birthday luncheon promises an Indian-inspired menu of Chicken Tikka Masala and a vegetarian curry. As always, Mujeres en Cambio (MeC) members provide side dishes to complement these wonderful main courses.
Suzanne Ludekens, ex-editor-in-chief of Atención San Miguel and long-time supporter of MeC, will speak at the luncheon.
’Mujeres’ has a lot to celebrate this month! Beginning in 1995 with a mere eight students, MeC has since provided scholarships to more than 600 deserving, bright and very dedicated young women. The growing body of research on educating poor women is clear: educated women, particularly those who finish secondary education, are less likely to marry young, to have unwanted pregnancies, or to engage in high-risk behavior. They will earn more money (10 to 20% for each additional year of education), see that their children receive an education and help their families and communities break the cycle of poverty. Many experts argue that educated women are the greatest catalyst to growing a middle class in developing countries such as Mexico.
Teachers and principals recommend students to us. To maintain a scholarship, students need to remain in school and continue to receive excellent grades, at minimum 8.5 out of 10.
Our organization is run as leanly and efficiently as possible with over 97 percent of the cost of your ticket going directly into our scholarship fund.
On January 19, we will celebrate the talented women that Mujeres en Cambio have helped over the years. These students continue to amaze us with their tenacity to stay in school despite financial and familial pressures to seek employment instead of an education.
Then, on January 28, Mujeres en Cambio continues our birthday celebration cooking up some of the best chili this side of the border for the annual Chili Cookoff. Look for our booth and have a taste of our homemade chili.
Tickets are 150 pesos, and must be purchased in advance at La Conexion, Aldama 3, or Solutions, Mesones 57. For more information, contact Arlene Krasner (email@example.com), or check our website: www.mujeresencambio.org.
