Confessions of a Musical Mind concert benefits Santa Julia girls

By Robin Loving Rowland

Award-winning composer, singer, poet, professor Cece Box will take listeners on a lively original musical tour influenced by Mozart, musical theater, comedy, tragedy and all the notes in between on the January 7, benefit for the girls of Casa Hogar Santa Julia.

Concert: Confessions of a Musical Mind, a benefit for Casa Hogar Santa Julia. Sat, Jan 7, 6pm. Hotel La Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio. 50 pesos

Cece was honored to perform her Darfur Lullaby on the National Mall in Washington DC as part of the Tents of Hope project in 2008. That same year, she produced Slightly Overdue, a CD of a dozen original songs. In 2009, top honors were accorded to Cece’s Santa, Won’t You Bring Me a Valentine? in the Great American Song Contest where she competed against a field of 300 other entrants.

Cece likes to say she is from “Small Town, Texas,” but that didn’t stop her from huge accomplishments in her educational career, which included work with IBM and Andersen Consulting. She now hails from San Antonio, where she works only on her first loves… music and writing.

Accompanying Cece, and also donating her services, will be locally noted pianist Liz Stone. Liz has studied piano since she was five. She is a teacher with a master’s degree in music education. She conducts a choir and a hand-bell chorus, and plays with a recorder group in addition to her work with other outstanding music professionals in San Miguel.

Slightly Overdue will be available for purchase at the concert, with all proceeds of CDs as well as concert entrance fee going to benefit the girls of Santa Julia. Entrance may be paid at the door.

The Santa Julia girls live in a group home due to “precarious family circumstances,” and wish to be known for their bright futures rather than their bleak pasts. The girls are cared for by five Dominican Sisters who receive virtually no assistance from either church or state for their 30-40 abandoned girls.
